Hand Poke Tattoos

Are hand poke tattoos permanent?

Yes, hand poke tattoos are just as permanent as machine-made tattoos. I utilize the same needles, inks, and sanitation practices as a machine tattooist uses. The only real difference is that the pigment is placed in the skin without mechanization. Basically, I am the machine - you can see my most recent hand poke tattoo work here.

Are there any benefits to the hand poke method of tattooing?

Hand poke tattoos tend to be less painful to receive and heal in about half the time of a machine-made tattoo. There is also a lot of control for the artist which allows for very delicate details.

Are there any downsides to hand poke tattoos?

Like most handmade vs. machine-made creations, hand poking is a slower process. This means larger pieces take more time. Larger pieces with a lot of line work and intense solid shading may be better suited for machine tattooing.

Is color possible with hand poke tattoos?

Yes, color is viable with hand poking. Fully saturated color over larger areas is better done with a machine.

Why don’t you use a machine?

I have been tattooing eyebrows and eyeliner for 6 years, so with a hand poke method, it just feels natural for me. I also enjoy the quiet intimacy hand poking provides as well as the more natural appearance. It’s a more meditative and intentional tattooing approach for the artist and client.
